Viral advertising research:

Viral advertising is any marketing technique that uses a variety of media platforms in order to draw in an audience, or to give the audience a message to promote a certain product in a way that would appeal to them, as well as to attract more audience members.

A good example of viral advertising would be the viral advertisements used from Batman: The Dark Knight. Most of the advertisement used to promote this film was created in the form of websites, as in the May before the film was released a website called IBeleiveInHarveyDent.com was created. this website. This website included a photo of 'Harvey Dent' in front of the American flag, with a slogan that is used in the film. Therefore this is a good way of virally advertising the film, as it gives a the audience a quick look at one of the characters in the film, as well as the characters personality, and what role they play in the film.

There was then a second website created called IBeleiveInHarveyDentToo.com were the image of 'Harvey Dent' had been altered to look more like the Joker. This again would be a good viral ad, as the audience would be given a quick insight on the storyline of the film, as they image on the website suggests that 'Dent'joins the Joker. Therefore the audience would become more interested in the storyline of the film, and would want to know what happens.

Another form of viral advertising would be viral videos.E.g. the producers for Prometheus Produced a video that looked like a TED talk, that was set in 2023. This video was actually shown at a real life TED conference.

After this a video was released about one of the characters within the film, this video introduced the character 'David' who is a robot in the film.

However not all viral advertising has to be completed via the internet, as when promoting The Dark Knight did use the website: whysoserious.com to promote the film, as they got a Gotham times fan to upload pictures of fans at the convention dressed as clowns, they also got messages placed inside balloons, and they gave out $1 notes that had been altered to have the jokers face on them. They even had planes to carry messages in the sky and a clip of the Joker using Morse code and laughing. So even though some of this promotion involved the internet, most of the promotion techniques used involved real life objects, therefore more people would have seen the advertisements so there would have been more people attracted by these advertisements.
