In 1969 Todorov came up with his own narrative theory which he believed to be able to be linked to all films. He said that all films had a pattern of equilibrium, disequilibrium, acknowledgement, solving, and new equilibrium. In a film he says it is in pattern of:
1. Equilibrium- there are nor problems everything is fine, there is a balance.
2. Disequilibrium/disruption- something happens that causes conflict and things change.
3. Acknowledgement- the characters recognise that something is wrong.
4. There is an attempt to sort out the damage of the disruption.
5. There is now a new and different equilibrium meaning there is a change and something is different but everything is still good.
While it is true that this theory links to most films, there are some films that have a non-linear narrative so it harder to find all of the points, this narrative is however easier to link to short films as it is easier to try and find these 5 main points.
