Group Title Sequence Research

We decided to look at some existing opening titles similar to the general idea/theme we were thinking of using for the opening titles to our short film in order to get a better idea of how we would film it, how to edit it, and what we can use to draw inspiration from so we can make a better opening title sequence.

Opening titles are important for any film as they have to set the mood for the film whilst providing information needed, such as actors, directors and the actual film title itself. Therefore it is vital that the opening titles for our short film give off an eerie mood to establish our short film as a psychological thriller/horror movie from the offset.

We already knew, after much discussion, we wanted to make our opening titles using shots of different art materials made to look deceivingly like murder scenes/murder equipment and generally creepy shots. As our film is set in an art studio, we thought this would generally set the scene whilst also making the audience think that it is a dark film - however also confusing the audience by making them question what the items in the shots really are. Therefore we decided to research as a group some existing opening title sequences similar to our general idea.

We found these four opening titles, that we will each take one to look at in closer detail. Two are from television show opening sequences (American Horror Story and The Walking Dead) and the other two are from films (Se7en and The Mimic).

1. American Horror Story (Season 1) - Phoebe

2. The Walking Dead (Season 3) - Theresa

3. Se7en  - Elizabeth

4. The Mimic - Amirah
