Claude Levi Strauss' narrative theory

Strauss came up with the idea that in most films there are 'binary opposites'. This means that within the film there will be two or more characters that have completely opposite personalities. These characters make the film more fun to watch for the audience as the conflict between these characters is often found interesting by the audience.
Examples of binary opposites include the following:

  • Good versus evil
  •  peace versus war
  • light versus dark
  • domestic versus foreign
  • young versus old
