Vladimir Propp's theory of narrative:

This theory suggests that every narrative has around eight different character types these include:

  • The villain, this character fights the hero of the film in some form.
  • The dispatcher, this character makes the evil plan of the villain known to the hero and gets the hero to resolve the problem.
  • The helper (magical helper), This character helps the hero in their battle, at the hero's request.
  • The princess/ prize, this is the thing/ person that the hero deserves throughout the film, but has been unable to get it because of the evil that has been happening, the hero marries the princess/ receives the prize at the end of the film, and lives happily ever after.
  • The princesses father, this character gives the task to the hero, as well as identifies the false hero, Propp stated that sometimes the princesses father and the princess can't be clearly distinguished in all films.
  • The donor, this character helps the hero prepare for battle and sometimes give the hero a magical object/ power in order to help them fight their battle.
  • The hero/ victim/ seeker, This character reacts to the donor, fights the villain and marries the princess.
  • False hero, this character takes the credit for all the hero has done and tries to marry the princess.
